In 2004 my wife and I were blessed with twin boys. We lost one of them, our son Spirit, shortly thereafter. For a while we didn’t know if his brother Rider would live either, though thankfully he did. It was the most painful experience of our lives. It's an experience that a parent can never wholly recover from.
Throughout this time, many people, some close, some just acquaintances, reached out to us with acts of kindness. They brought us meals, offered to baby-sit our daughter, and shared their own stories to let us know that life would become better with time. These acts were so small, yet made a big difference to us.
This experience helped us realize that each of us goes through painful times in life, and each of us will have the opportunity to help others going through their own bad times. Reaching out in this way helps the receiver know that others care, but it also helps heal the giver as well. These connections between people are incredibly powerful.
We realized that these connections are something everyone wants more of. These are the connections that give life meaning. There is no other feeling like having a positive impact on someone’s life.
It's wonderful to help someone when the opportunity presents itself, but why don’t people take the initiative to reach out to others more often? Most of the available options for volunteering require an ongoing time commitment that busy people have difficulty making. We talked to lots of people who say they would love to volunteer but just don't have time. So we set out to find simple acts of kindness that could fit into anyone’s lifestyle and a network of people to share them with.
Angel Quest is our way of finding meaning in our loss. If not for our son’s short life, we would never have been inspired to make this idea reality. It amazes us that one tiny life could help bring so many acts of kindness into the world.
We also hope that, with the money we raise and donate to children's health charities, we can someday help give a chance for a child like ours to live.
It’s also our goal that our story will help others see that even terrible tragedies can have a purpose. Even though we can’t always choose what happens to us, we can choose how we respond our problems. That message is the heart of Angel Quest.
