These Earth Silk spools are made by hand in our Seattle studio. Our 100% silk hand dipped, bias cut ribbon dyeing process produces a unique look with subtle qualities that cannot be found in traditional ribbon dyeing. Our process creates almost zero waste and generates a lasting work of art. Offered in two finishes, the silk is a 10 m/m which means it is as light as air and yet incredibly strong. Our satin finish has one shiny smooth side that catches the light for a truly elegant appearance and also give a weight and depth to the color not found in the regular silk.
These silk ribbons are colorfast (after washing) washable, dry-cleanable, 100% silk and are bias cut which gives them a nice body or stretch. Over time the cut edges will fray naturally. We highly recommend ordering samples if your project is color sensitive. We also recommend washing a sample to see how it behaves before working the silk into anything that may be exposed to water.
Our silk is traditionally dyed to create stunning works of art. The bias cut gives them a dramatic drape. The cut on the bias means in a continuous spool; there is a seam every two yards and the raw unfinished edges will naturally soften with wear. We finish our seams with silk thread to help create a seamless appearance throughout the spools. We highly recommend ordering samples (which we send for free!) if your project is color sensitive.
Not to be confused with Hanah Silk; these spools are made by Of The Earth. The hand dyed process produces a unique look that has subtle qualities that cannot be found in traditional ribbon dyeing. In conventional dyeing the yarn is first dyed in a vat and then loaded onto a loom where the strands are woven together to form the ribbon. In this hand dyeing method all of the action happens while the bias cut spool is tightly wrapped, that pressure resist influences where and how the dye is absorbed. We hope you enjoy our ribbons as much as we like making them! There are over 150 colors in our line and we continue to add more as our customers continue to bring custom requests.
